Old Merc 200 Auto Transmission Problem

I have acquired a 1960 Merc model 200 22 hp serial number 1341599 motor and it runs perfectly, except the water pump is shot. I have removed the powerhead and the gear housing assmbly. I also removed the pawls and the pawl springs and then pulled the large transmission spring from the bottom of the leg. The small spring and the pump impellor assembly above are still there and I cannot figure how to get them out. I do not have the special merc tools and the merc manual is very poorly written and illustrated. It simply says to push on the drive shaft and the whole thing will come out the bottom. That did not work.<br />What can I do now? please help.<br />Bill K.

Those punps were were hard to change with all the tools and will be impossable without, most dealers won't even work on them.

I tapped on the drive shaft with a mallet and it came out with the rest of the tranny. I can see the retainer that holds the bearing, seal and water pump. What kind of tool do I need to get that out of there?? Can I make it??

Look in the Mercury manual (poorly written) part number 90-25500 In section III on page 46, and it clearly shows the tools you need part number 91-28742A1 and 91-27532A1, you will also need tool number 91-27780 to pull the w/pump cartridge. Ok no help

I called the local merc dealer gave then the part numbers and they laughed and wished me luck finding those tools

I made a tool and have removed the retainer and now I am having a proplem getting the bearing out. Are there any special tricks to get it out?

i have the same engine ,1960 i used a slide hammer and expandable clamps, i rented it from Autozone,when pulling out that bearing ring you need to turn it clockwise.your gonna need a little leverage,screwthe expandable tool inside the ring ,theres 4 spaces,expande into 2 grooves,until tightin ,get a leverage bar turn right,it will come out.
