I have an old Merc 800 model E outboard. The serial number is 1401605A. Can you please tell me the year of my outboard. I will need an impeller, new plug wires, and carb rebuild kits so any assistance on any of these will be a great help. Also can you advise me on how much one of these things in good running condition with a rebuilt powerhead is worth?

I also need a gasket for the lower unit as the oil looks like coffee with tons of milk added.

Why don't you go to the Mercury Marine web site and look up your own parts and order what you want?
Backfire

I believe it's a 1961. Does it have a place for a throttle AND a shift cable on the left side? This is important to determine it's usefullness and value.

All those parts are readily available from a Merc dealer. Don;t replace the plug wires unless they leak. Run it at night and look for sparkles. My '61 800 still has the factory plug wires. If you've never done it before, I'd reccomend dropping off the lower unit to get re-sealed at the dealer.
-W
