Old Mercury stoping

I had trouble with motor, got it running, thanks for all the help, but did I read right that you are not to push the stop button ,you are to pull the choke when stopping the motor I read that pushing stop could damage stator? 9.8 110 motor1973 model. Thanks

Why would pushing a stop button be there if it can,t be used unless there was some sort of defect in the system for your motor sorry but that don,t make sense to me
