Old motor new steering

Greetings all, and thank you for your previous assistance. 'Twas much appreciated.
1963-64 Evinrude/Gale with a "bar" (for lack of the proper term) on the front of the motor for the steering. (Joins to the motor by 2 rubber mounts.) This is where the original steering cable bolted. (but I am sure almost everyone here knows what I am talking about already!)
I now have a new Uflex rotary helm steering system I want to install. The local dealer told me that I would have to fabricate an adapter to connect the single cable to the motor. He went on about selling me some Heim ends, etc. I would have to fabricate a "drop" system, so when the motor turns, the bar would not hit the cable.
Even if I bought the needed parts and built one, I think that there must be a better way, out there somewhere, that is already built.
Help?

Re: Old motor new steering

Greetings Paul.
You have helped before, valued your input.
I have perused all the info provided, I still don't understand how they connect to the steering bar, and how the cable connects.
Too many years of the Mrs swatting at my head for playing with my toys maybe.. :D

I'm sorry, somehow I read UFlex and then gave you a bunch of Teleflex stuff. Let me try again.

First, you need to secure the sheath (non-moving part) of the steering cable to the boat in such a way that it will swivel with the engine turning/tilting. Uflex makes a little device for this (S39):
ufxs39.jpg
So that thing bolts to your transom with this sort of arrangement (Diagram A):

Now, next you need to connect the end of the steering cable (the part that moves) to the engine. Start with a clevis (A75, ignore A73/A74):
16-4.jpg
The cotter-pinned pin goes through the fitting on the end of the steering cable, leaving you with a nut and stud facing upwards - that is to say the same orientation as in the clevis diagram. Now you're going to need a bolt hole to attach that to the engine that goes in the vertical plane. The hole in the 'handle' of your outboard is in the horizantal plane. I don't think Uflex sells anything to do that, but the Teleflex diagram shows you basically what you need (you could even use that):

That bolts on to the hole in the outboard's 'handle' and provides the vertical hole needed for the clevis.

Clear as mud? I'll give it another shot if not. :)

PS - if you can make 'Diagram B' work, it's a better system (IMO). The clevis end works the same, you just use Uflex S40 rather than S39.

Re: Old motor new steering

Okay. I get it now. I think... Diagram "A" is a no-go. Diagram "B" would be my only option. There is not enough room to mount the cable to the transom, narrow bateau that it is. So I would need the following parts: A75; the part labelled "K" in the above diagram; and the plate that would secure the cable to the side of the splashwell, herein referred to as "S40".

Part "K" attaches directly to my steering arm. Part A75 attaches to "K". The steering cable attaches to "A75" after going through "S40" which is attached to my splashwell. Did I get it right? Did I? Did I?

Yup that's it! I don't know if (K) will fit without modification onto A75 since that's a teleflex part. When you see what they charge for (K) you'll probably want to make your own anyway. :)
S40:
