Re: old motors
Well, as a matter of fact, the Fleetwin went into production in 1950. The Zephyr was discontinued in favor of the Fleetwin. From 1949 to 1956, Johnson and Evinrude started getting more serious about sharing designs with each other and making more parts interchangable with each other. 1949 Johnson introduced the QD-10, being the first OMC with the FNR lower unit and 1950, the Fastwin had virtually identical lower unit. 1954, Johnson and Evinrude did it again with the CD and Fleetwin, the same lower units. Each of these models kept their own design of powerheads though. In 1956, Johnson and Evinrude combined and shared all models of motors with each other, and just keeping their own color schemes and shroud styling. In this year also, Johnson acquired the FD 15 (Fastwin in disguise) and AD 7.5 (Fleetwin in disguise) and Evinrude acquired the Sportwin (QD in disguise) and the Fisherman (CD in disquise) In 1951, both divisions worked together and combined the 25hp (RD and Big Twin) making it their first corporate motor. In 1952, they worked together again and built the Lightwin and JW's. Oddly enough, Evinrude acquired Johnson in 1936, but they didn't become more of the same motors, until the 1950's.
1951 The RD replaced the PO
1951 The Big Twin replaced the Big Fours
1952 The JW replaced the HD
1952 The Lightwin replaced the Sportwin (3.3)
1954 The CD replaced the TD/TN
1954 The Fleetwin was just improved with the FNR
1956 All models were available under both marques
