Old Outboard Addiction

I just wanted to say thtat I am 17 years old, and a few years ago, if I had seen an outboard motor, I wouldn't have thought anything about it. But when I got my grandfather's boat, and bought a 1972 Evinrude 9 1/2 hp, everything changed. Now, when I see an old outboard on TV or at a lake, I get this feeling of awe and intrigue. I just love to look at old outboards and see them run. I guess it's an addiction. My other grandfather has a 1957 Evinrude 7 1/2 hp that he used for years on his jon boat. Now it is just sitting in his shop on a stand (I hope to restore it one day), and every time I go to his house, I go out there and just look at it and think about all the good times my dad and grandfather must have had with that motor. Does anyone else have the same kind of feelings for these old classics? Just a thought!

Brent :)

Oh yes, and it probably is an addiction. The old motors bring back memories. You may want to hang on to the '57 because it was your Grandad's. I may want to hang onto it because (maybe like your Gramps) it brings back memories of vacations when I was growing up.

As addictions go, there are worse....

Hi Brent,
I started out much like you, only younger! I had a half dozen motors by the time I was 16 and now try to keep it around 40.

Yes, there is a club devoted to antique, classic and just plain old outboards - the Antique Outboard Motor Club and they have a very active website - www.aomci.org . Their membership is several thousand strong and covers just about every brand, make, era and type of motor ever made! They put out a nice quarterly magazine and on the off months they put out a newsletter with wanted/for sale stuff and upcoming meets. I've been a member for about 20 years now.

Check out the "wall" on my site... www.pfs-ware.com/smith and you'll see what an addiction can lead to! As was said previously - there are worse things you could be doing with your time and money!

Above all have fun and play safe!
- Scott

Thank you all for the replies. Bear, I have that website on my favorites list, and I go look at pictures from the old sales catalogs almost every day! Chinewalker, I love your site, and think it's great that you have a page for old outboards. Maybe you or someone else could start a page where people from this board(like me) can send in pictures of their motors and have them on the site...just an idea! I'm so glad to know that other people have the love for old outboards like I do. I think I am going to join that outboard club...it looks like something I would enjoy. Thanks

Brent
