I have been given an old outboard. There are no identifying marks on it other than a raised logo, that I am not sure what it is. It looks a little like a dogs head with a lightning bolt after it. (I can try to post a picture of it after I clean it up a little.)
I am guessing that it is between a 3 and 9HP motor.

It has been sitting for a least 8 years, and does not seem like it was winterized. (I pulled the fuel line it smelled like varnish) I took off the Carb and cleaned it best I could, one of the controls, it might be a low idle control, is stuck.

What kind of information should I post to see if anyone can help ID this motor.

I would like to

jollymon

Once you get it cleaned up, look aroung on the transom bracket and powerhead for any numbers you can find. Sometimes they are on a Welsh plug the size of a quarter. Sounds like a Merc. from the lightning bolt emblem. A pic would help, too.

Re: old outboard help

Rick,

I found the tag with the serial number. It is a Johnson model OD 22 S The serial number is 2241061. I thing it is a 10HP motor, there is a decal on the cover, but it has been painted over (The whole motor has been painted black.)

How would I find out the year and if I can get a service manual of any type?

Thanks
Scott

Hi Jollyman
Your QD22 is a 1961 10hp model. You can find a manual here at Iboats, look at the bottom of the page. You my also find one at your public library.

Now the big question is:

Is this motor worth putting any money into?

Supposedly it ran 6 or 7 years ago, and nothing has been done to it since.

Re: old outboard help

Hi Jollyman
Well that is a question only you can answer. My opinion is that if the thing is mechanicly sound and just needs basic tune-up and some cosmetic repairs, it is worth it to me. My guess is that it should take about $150. to make this a real nice dependable fishing motor. This figure is for parts and a manual only, your labor will be free.
