Now that i have identified the O/B and got the parts to get it running i would like to continue with my mission to restore it to it's former new condition.

I dont have issues with the internals but need some advice on the exterior look.

1) Is it ok to have the whole O/B sandblasted as the condition of the paint is very bad? If not how do i remove all the existing paint?

2) what type of paint will i need to re-pait it after all the old stuff is removed?

Any help for you guys would be great.

Thanks

Chris.

I'm not sure I would sand blast the thing as a whole, maybe the tanks and cowls, but those are easy to clean out afterwords. Since it is probably all aluminum you well need to prime the thing with aluminum primer, Zinc Chromate, and then either find some matching automotive spray paint or have some mixed up at an automotive paint store. Then once it is painted, wax the hell out of it :D

Plain old nasty spray-on oven cleaner degreases and strips the paint off, too. Follow directions...can be nasty stuff. Strip it, clean it, rinse it and then go over it with plain old steel wool and some fine sandpaper. Clean and rinse again, then use the zinc chromate/phosphate primer already mentioned. Follow with your color coat and then some clear coat. Make sure all the paint chemistry is compatible...stick to one brand to be sure. I've had real good luck using Duplicolor primer, color and clear coat paint when restoring outboards. Durable finish and easily touched up when it gets scratched...and it will.
