Old Outboard Year?

I have a Johnson 85hp Electromatic, the Model: V4AL-19M and the Serial: J2809369.<br /><br />So far I can get it to turn over all day, but it will not fire. The previous owner said he changed the starter because it stopped on him while skiing, and it had worked fine up until that moment. <br /><br />But I must say that I found a red & white striped wire that comes from the engine but is not attached to anything. It appears to have been attached to something at one time.<br />Thanks

V4AL-19 is a 1967 80 HP<br />V4AL-20 is a 1968 85 HP<br /><br />The VL-20 is the only 85 HP they made between 1958 and 1969 when the model numbers changed to 85ESL-69<br />ESL (Electric Start Long Shaft)
