I have two old outboards that I need info on.
The small one has no identifiable manufacturers name. All I have to go on are these two numbers on the ID plate.
J500 1108
351190
I would like to know manufacturer, year, and HP.
The other is a Chrysler 20 HP. model 204HB, serial number 3706. What year was this one manufactuered.
Thanks

Re: old outboards

j would probably indicate Johnson, but the #s don't match anything look at it again, J5 & maybe letters. you say it's a small engine so J would be johnson, 5 hp the rest would be the year code. unless i'm totally off base. can you post a couple of pictures of it. that will help.

Thank you for the help. I know I don't have much to go on on the other motor. I will keep trying.

Thank you for the help. I will double check the codes. I will post pictures if I can figure out how? If it helps the engine cover is plastic or fiber glass. All writing on it has worn away as well as anything else on the ID plate. I will dig some more.

Re: old outboards

Clinton built a J500 in 70 and 71 5hp@5,600 rpm. Power head is air cooled with a water cooled exhaust leg.Clinton has been out of business for some years.
These motors are marginal performers.I wouldn't put too much money into it.Someone may be along with a parts source.

Thanks very much. I will see what other info I get. I will take your advice and only get a tune up, clean carb, etc. and run it till it drops.
Thanks again.

Re: old outboards

the clinton motor is actually a lawn mower powerhead. as said above, kinda weak on performance.

parts are kinda scarce. twincityoutboards.com has some parts.

i have twin 1970 3.5 clintons. made fro montgomery wards, titled SEA KING 3.5

if you REALLY REALL Y REALLY just gotta keep it alive, most small engine shops / lawn motor reapr shops can get some parts for the powerhead.

dont use it in salt water

Re: old outboards

steelespike: you did write 2 stroke oil ... that's not outboard oil.

had one of those air-cooled Clinton's they run REAL hot and need weedtrimer type oil that stand up to more heat.

Castrol make a fine 2 cycle (non outboard oil) for air cooled engines.

Cheers

Oh no pecheux! Look down the list for "Air Cooled Outboard Oil Recommendation" for more oil wars. Steelspike's got me tenetively convinced on this now. :D
6800 isn't that outlandish when you recall that's a chain saw engine up there.
