I am replacing seals and gaskets on the lower unit. There have been several screws twist off at the head and I need to order new ones. My question is should I replace all the screws and where is the best place to buy them?

I have an 1960 Evinrude Lark 40 hp. Thanks.

Re: Old Screws

Which ones did you break, the ones that hold the rear cover? Those are part number 305745 and are listed as no longer available. The last price was $3.03 each.

I'd try www.mcmaster.com Search for fillister head screws. They certainly will be a lot less expensive.

Re: Old Screws

What screws' are you needing? If on the lower skeg, Allan head, stainless steel cap screws', 1/4- 20 would be the easiest to find.

Re: Old Screws

That would depend on their condition. Is there enough of the empellor housing screw left to get a hold of

Go to an actual industrial fastener place. You will find everything you need at a fraction of the price and equal or better quality.

I believe most of the screws you're talking about should be standard 1/4-20... You can pick them up just about anywhere really... Any hardware store for that matter... If you can't get the old ones out, just drill 'em and insert heli-coils... Also, just make sure the "hardness" is the same (indicated by the "marks" (or lack thereof) on the head)
