I was given an old sears 5 hp outboard motor by a family member. It looks like it is from the 70's but the chassis # is 217-59450 and serial # is 157274. It has only been used 4 times in its lifetime and has been sitting in a garage for the past 10 years. Im trying to get it running and i wanted to get a new spark plug and the one that was in it is a old harley davidson 3-4 plug and all the store near me dont have cross reference numbers for it and cant help me. I was wondering if anyone out there would know what plug i will need? It would help me alot, thank you.

My manual indicates 59450 is a 72 7.5 you may want to double check your numbers All models use Champion J13Y plug set at .030.
These motors are marginal performers I would suggest you spend as little as possible until you see if you like it.

Re: old sears 5 hp outboard motor spark plug

I just came across a sears 5.5 model 217-59430 and need some info also.
1) is it always this loud or is the muffler shot?
2) does IT have a muffler of any sort?
3) is there any manuel for it that I can get?
4) how old is it?
5) whats the first thing to do for maintance( the gentelman did start it up for me so it does run)
If you can help in anyway I would appriciate it very much.
Thanks,
nels (old seabee)
