Old Sears outboard identification

I have an old Sears outboard. The only numbers on it are on a metal tag near the carb. They are 640-16 Tecumseh 6308. See image. Anybody know what this motor is?

Welcome to Iboats....

Though I'm no expert on the subject matter, some careful googling on the engine tag # leads me to believe you have a 7.5 HP Ted Williams.

Thanks. I had a feeling it was a 7.5hp ted williams. I have had it for about 20 years. The last time I had it running was about 15 years ago and it ran very well. I actually picked it out of the garbage. It wouldn't run when I got it home. No spark. I was able to find the parts to fix it and had it on the back of a 10 ft. Duracraft jon boat.

I remember it would not get the boat on plane. Almost but just wouldn't make the transition.

Yeppah - It's a 1977 7.5Hp Sears gamefisher. get a load of this;

The good news is that it's the lightest 7.5hp motor I've ever been able to find. The less than great news is that it uses Tecumseh's world renowned flop of a solid state ignition, which is no longer available. There are some inventive folks here, who have made a study of resurrecting these defunct SSI stators. When you are screwing around with this motor, never turn it over without that plug wire grounded, that can easily barbecue the stator if it's not dead already. If it has a kill switch, I might disconnect it, and use the choke to kill it. If it still has spark, it's probably not gonna be hard to make it go again. If it has no spark, and cleaning up all connections is no help, it's probably still recoverable, but it will be a bit of a process. If you want to take a crack at it, the expertise is readily available. You need to join this crew, too;

It might be a little older than the 1977 as it has no twist grip. The throttle is on the front of the motor along with a choke knob and idle mix knob. It does not have a kill switch. It does have good spark and probably will start right up if I put fuel in it. I drained it when I put it away 15 years ago. When I first got it it had a different power head. The origional one had points and condenser and that one had no spark.I was having trouble finding parts 20+ years ago for it. I got the newer power head from a boat shop in the area for free(Long story). he had it laying around the shop for a few years because the lower end was crushed in an accident..The power head was actually pretty new but it didn't fit my colomn assembly exactly. I had a friend with a machine shop make me a new top plate for $40.. I put it together and it ran like a charm. The new power head had the solid state ignition. I'm going to clean it up to use on a 14 ft. jon boat.

pic's don't add up, engine has been changed. outboard is a 68ish , engine is a 1977.

as a matter of fact I don't see how the AV 817 640 engine could be sealed at the water jacket on that old Eska platform...that outboard would have had a AV 750 max

mrcrabs..that is correct. As in my previous post you will see that I changed the engine. As far as the seal goes. The top plate where it connects to the water jacket was only slightly different from the origional one. I was a UPS driver at the time and I had a large machine shop on my route. I took him a scale drawing of the plate I needed and he made one for me. I made a new gasket to fit and it all bolted up perfectly. I used the motor on a 10 ft. Duracraft jon boat for about 5 years and never had a problem with it. I drained the fuel,ran it dry and put it where you see it in the pic in 1997. I still have the origional engine also. I will try to post a pic of the ID plate of the old one.

Well that expalns that, you had me going for awhile, I have a nice AV 750 engine setting all stored away...I need to sell off some of my collection of single cylinder stuff do to my new found love of the BV1500 twin cylinder water cooled.
