we bought a sears outboard model #217-58610 we lookd that model up on a website we found and it shows to be a 5hp year 1970 engine but on the front of the gas tank it says 3.5 hp ? this has us confused did someone change tank or lower unit but anyways we need a coil for it and impeller the coil has died on it in the past and someone has mounted a car coil on it so it has to be hooked to a 12 volt battery before it will start and run it runs well other than the impeller will not pump water i this it has aair cooled engine and the exaust is water cooled corect me if im wrong we need to find a place to buy parts for it
thanks in advance

Re: old sears outboard info needed

www3.sears.com might have parts and information for you. Enter your numbers there and you might be able to see parts diagrams. Odds are pretty good.

I come up with 1970 5Hp too. Somebody played mix-and-match with parts.

They use Tecumseh powerheads and any lawnmower dealer can help you with a coil. There'll be a metal flag on it somewhere. You'll need the numbers off that. The water pump impeller is going to be the challenge. You're right about air cooled powerhead and water cooled exhaust. It'll run with a failed water pump, but it'll run better if it works.
