Old Tanaka 300, need some help please.

I'm a newbie around these parts, Currently an Oregon resident. I'd like to use this on my 12' Klamath aluminum.

Hello everyone, I've just procured a Tanaka 300 motor. The folks I got her from said that it ran when put into storage a few years ago. After I check the fuel system over it appears to have been stored properly (innards are spotless) but is beat up on the out side.

The plastic case on the choke lever is broken and has a screw missing. Is this an easy part to find? Is there a way to rig it up to work or is it usable wide open. Bear with me, I know almost nothing about outboard motors.

Also, they appeared to have changed the fuel filter (clear plastic looks rusty) and hoses. . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a old Tanaka TOB 300 myself, it never has givin me any problems so far and I have never worked on it but I had to get a prop for it this year due to having banged the old one up to the point it vibrated to bad to use, so I called Tanaka http://www.tanaka-usa.com/index.php?section=129 I think there down in Atlanta there web site has PDF parts list and they should have every thing you need, as a side note there was only 2 TOB 300 new props left in the world and now theres only one and I have it.

I actually found the part through sears, Tanaka ws out of stock. Thanks for these replies fellers.

I'm currious if I can try to get her running with the air claner broken like it it, will it damage the motor (or blow me up).

I have one of those automotive type Hi/pro small, cone shaped crome top filters on mine, they don't need it but they do need a water deflector of some sort

Got her running, after replacing the filter, cleaning the tank and replacing the plug. The gas looked a little think to me, I remember 2 cycle gas mix being darker. I measured the oil with a 10 ml syrenge, I put in 65-70 ml's per galllon. Will the viscosity of the oil make it different?

I hope to tell yeah, it better be TCW3 or better @ 50:1 for the aircooled Tanaka, I use J/E XD25 or better

I've been running a Tanaka 3HP now for 25+ years and it's a good, simple motor to run and work on. That black plastic carb cover is just to keep water out of carb during rain, spray, etc. It'll run fine without it, but it's a good idea to get one or make one. Good Luck!

Took the boat out to the lake today trying to go after Cabela's million dollar Bass.
Not a millionaire but the motor ran amazing, once warm it started on the first pull. Now I just need to touch it up some, like the Idle and such.

The manuel doesn't explain much, does anyone know of a resource where I can find out what it's sapposed to sound like. ?

I picked up one of these recently and it runs great after cleaning the carb. In place of the plastic intake/deflector it had something I have never seen before. A small block of wood about 1 inch thick, cut round to fit the carb casting. There were tiny holes drilled through it to let air through. Works great so I've left it on there.

Sounds like a good, cheap, creative way to keep most rain, spray, water out of carb. Good Luck!

the last part - what's is supposed to sound like ? like running aircooled 2 stroke , have yougot a bearing rumble noise or something ? I stand corrected but the smaller 1.2 hp TAS used 25;1 fuel ratio , maybe your 300 would be happier at that , if its getting a hot 'laboured' sound under extended near full throttle conditions (if the 2.5hp - 300 has the adjustable main jet just richen it up under load & see if it "sounds ok/better" )- i always found a semi-synthetic hi-perf Motorcross oil(for aircooled 2strokes) more suited to these engines.
They were built by the Firm that built jap ww2 aircraft engines (& sundry apu's) so they have a knowledable lineage built into them


another tip most should remember is with the recoil pull-starters : pull them out until the rope mechanism engauges,then tug to start motor,rather than a rough tear at it ... helps to prevent chopping out the flywheel pawls engaugement area,a weakness with some earlier (1970's models)

Great thanks for the replies. I used B & G 2 cycle oil and it seemed to run fine, but it does sound sound a little labored when I hit the gas. I'll try wht you guys have suggested. and again thanks.

I just bought a tanaka 300 that will not start it fires but just wont run. I have cleaned the jets, checked flow and it comes from the tank good and the float floats and the bowl is full but not getting to the cylinder?

Tanaka 300. Missing the part you use to mount to boat were can i find one? Or maybe info on what i can rig up?
