Old Teleflex steering Rack ( SSC124 ) Question

I currently have a tilt steering helm and I would like to keep it and just replace the cable. I hear that the no feedback NFB style cable from teleflex does not work with my helm. Anyways my question is, Has anyone purchased the old style SSC124 steering cable? If so how does it feel? is it easy to turn or should i sacrifice my tilt steering and get the no feedback steering? I know that the tilt steering is available for the SSC134 which is the cable that comes in the ss151 kit. I have 15 foot cable by the way and it is very hard to move right now.

Thanks!

Wrong forum,
try boat forum, or resto forum.
This Johnson forum is way too busy for non engine questions.

Re: Old Teleflex steering Rack ( SSC124 ) Question

I have confirmed with teleflex that if you have the tilt mechanism that has the rubber bellow and no the hard plastic around the mechanism, then yes you can keep it and use it with the updated ssc134 style cable. sometimes this cable is called ss151 its the NFB for rack steering. If you have the old helm (pre 1996, all you need to buy is the need updated cable and the helm for tilt steering.
The part numbers are

Cable: ssc134XX if 15ft then your part would be ssc13415
helm:SH91630p

Re: Old Teleflex steering Rack ( SSC124 ) Question

By the way for those of you that have the old style cable ssc124, there is no need to upgrade if your helm is in good condition, especially if you have tilt steering. I just installed the new replacement cable ssc12415 and it is extremely easy to move now. Its my first boat so i was not aware how easy it should have been to steer boat. I keep old helm and tilt mechanism.
