Hello,

I am parting out a 19' boat with a bad transom and a bad motor gushing water. After removing most of the external motor parts, gimble, and outdrive, I discovered a soft plug behind the flywheel had given way and that was the souce of the gushing water (not a cracked motor block).

What advice would any of you give me for selling, trading, or disposing of these old workable parts. I can tell you the motor is a straight six ser # 2563184 and ran well despite flooding the vessel. I believe the outdrive is a pre-alpha which does shift. Are there people who like to refurbish older boats with motors and outdrives from the same era?

I can put the motor components back on to the motor but I would never have to time or desire to put this all back together on a different sea worthy vessel. (I have 2 jobs, 4 kids in college, and a nice 19' Bluefin in my back yard)

Any advice you guys can give me is extremely appreciated!!

craigslist, ebay

often those core plugs pop out when the block freezes. it could be cracked - they run great cracked. in the short term

a pressure test of the cooling system would be the first step after replacing that plug

Thank you Capt. for the advice. I will put the components back on the motor and give it a pressure check. Not really sure how to do that but I'm sure I can find the information on the forum without to much trouble. That is a pretty cool picture of a sterndrive you have. Pure engineering back in the day!!

Craigslist or Ebay for selling it. You're not going ot get much for them, since it is a crapshoot for a buyer with any boat driveline parts that old.

I had the same plug rot out on my boat. If it has a steel plug there, then you may have a truck engine in it. Marine engine would have had brass. You can take a look at the right front corner of the block, where the front mount attaches. If is a marine engine the mount will be attached to an ear on the block casting. If it is a truck engine it will have something more creative there. Maybe a bracket or something attached to the oil pan bolts.

A true marine block would be worth more.

Thanks Jim, the block has a Mercruser ID serial # attached to it so I would assume it was originally made for the Merc company.

What do you think I should ask for the shooting match if I put it up for sale? Motor, tilt/trim, gimbel, outdrive, shifter and instrument cluster. 1968 vintage "when life was worth living" !!
