Here's the deal with using Oak in a Marine Environment. If it's White Oak, it's ok cuz it has it's own built in preservatives and has been used in boat building for centuries. Red Oak on the other hand is NOT a good hardwood to use for the Marine environment. Having said this, the OTR will "Do it's Thing" on any wood. Technique is the same. Apply liberally until the wood seems to have soaked it in and won't absorb any more. Let it dry for 2-3 days and then apply 2-3 full strength coats of urethane. What are you intending to use the oak for??? If it's for a "Finish" environment, I'd choose a different wood. If it structural, I'd ask Why??

I have a StarCraft Falcon that is missing the factory back to back bench seating. My plan is to use the original mounting flanges to support a wooden bench that I will mount my seats to.
I got a hold of some 1"x3"x6' and 1"x4"x6' true 1" thick white oak boards. They were a very high end futon.

Well then for that purpose I'd think the OTR would do the Trick very nicely!!! Don't think you'll be replacing that oak for decades!!!:thumb:

Great.
I have the old finish stripped off and the wood is very light color.
I'll be doing some experimenting with staining the wood and applying the OTR.

I'd recommend sanding with 100 and then applying the OTR. After it's fully dried I'd sand with 180 and then 220. Then I'd apply the final 2-3 coats of Spar Urethane.

I have 4 test pieces sanded with 120.
Three of the pieces are stained with Varathane fast dry stain (Golden Mahogany) the last piece is bare wood
The unstained piece will just be getting the spar, the second piece will be getting two coats of stain just to see how it looks, the third piece will get the OTR and spar the last stained piece will just get the spar.
I want to see how different treatments effects the color of the wood.
