Just finished rebuilding the old style pump, prestolite. I pulled out the pluger, not sure of the tech name its the one that is held in with a drift pin in the lower manifold housing. When I went to reinstall the pluger the o-ring gets nicked on the pin holes, causing a leak. Only leaks when going down but is starting to make me mad have gone through 3 o-rings. Is there a trick to installing this pluger back in.

Re: old trim pump

Thanks, I have a merc manual though, just looked at it to find the name of the part I'm talking about. Its the plug that holds the slide valve in place. It only shows it in the cut away picture of the valve body. Thinking of taking two nails and rounding them, so the o-ring will slide across the opening with out nicking its self. Have not found any info though on how to replace it in the manual.

try using some thin plastic strips as a protectant. plastic dishwasing bottles can make good strip providers. as long as they can clear. I have also used .002" brass shim strips.
