old viking 35hp model 354141 won't go in gear...

rod that runs down front of the leg and into the lower unit seems siezed and when i unbolt the lower unit it won't come of because the rod is stuck...the lower unit only comes about 1/2 an inchdown then stops and reverse is engaged when bolted tight is in neutral. is there something that would make the rod so tight? what should i do to free it up?heat?tried to tap it with a hammer but to no avail.also can anyone tell me who made viking?it says eatons but is it made by evinrude or johnson or what?any help would be appreciated !

Not much point in replying to a 7 year old thread. Either the guy got it fixed or threw it away by now.

Even if it is a Chrysler and he didn't disconnect the coupling.
