gentlemen I have 1998 starcraft fih n ski , it is prewiwired for a trolling motor but it has never been used dont know the gauge of the wires and I cant send a pic (boat at lake ) the setup looks a litle cheap . the setup passed a continuity check. (this a twelve volt setup)I am going to rewire this winter over this concern, what gauge wire should I use to be safe and last 4ever? after fishing wires thru hull it will be about 18ft of wiring. I will also replace the circuit breaker in the panel where the plug is . it also looks cheap, any tips or any thing I should know thanks in advance.

The circuit breaker belongs within a foot of the positive termnal on the battery -- not at the bow by the connector. just because something looks cheap does not mean it is not safe or functional. Why replace existing wiring with new wiring that may look the same. Over that distance and with that motor, 6 gauge wire is ideal, but you may get away with 8 gauge. The distance is not 18 feet -- it is 36 feet as you need to consider round trip. The breaker will need to be a 60 amp manual reset. 50 amp is too close to the maximum current draw.
