Hey guys just looking for a little insight I have a 89 120 recently new to me I've already got it running really well (with the help of my father) and we resealed the drive now I haven't run it too much but come spring I will it performed really well on water trials had a couple carb issues which have hopefully been resolved anyhow my question is I have a lead on a 140 outta a 1966 Dixie it also has a pre alpha drive I can get for right around $150 and it includes everything motor, drive, exhaust riser and manifold transom assembly and anything else pulled from the boat now I know it might now be a 66 but I know the linkage is definitely different from mine (66 doesn't mount to the valve cover ) but I figured its worth it for parts but the owner says it runs which I'll take with a grain of salt but I'm one who doesn't mind having spare parts around but my question to you guys is the compatibility with my 89 (ob574058) I would think a lot of is the same and thanks in advance for any input

Ayuh,.... The Long Block, may, or may not swap easily, it should,....

Everything else is somewhat, to majorly different,....

Without hearin' the motor Run, I'd pass on it,...

Thanks for the response I kinda figured the block is the same just didn't know if the head and maybe exhaust components and some other odds and ends would be the same

Re: Older 140 to 89 120 compatibility

Mercruiser didn't have a 140 in 1966. They had a 110 and 120 in the 4cyl line. The drive on that 66 will be the MC-1B EZ Shift. Gimbal, transom plate, manifold are all different. The alternator has an external regulator if it is original. The only two accessories I think may swap are the starter and distributor. If it were closer to me, I would jump on it since that is the exact drive/motor combo I have in my 1966 Aristocraft 18. Mine runs good and parts are still available right here on iboats so I will keep running it until it make financial sense to do a later 120/140 alpha swap.
