I went to a marina to try and order a shop manual for my motor, and they were telling me about how the older 3cyl could over heat really easily causing major damage, something about almost bankrupting mercury, is this true? or was he trying to sell me a 150 4cyl:D that boat is only designed for a 65HP max:eek:

I don't know about bankrupting Mercury, but the 1970s era 65hp 3-cylinder models DID have a problem cooking the top cylinders. Seems they would form a steam pocket at the top of the block that would prevent water from circulating properly - they blew a lot of powerheads in the day... I think the fix required the telltale source to be moved to the top of the block...

I bought a 1976 Bayliner Mosquito with one. It needed a new impellar. About 2 hours work and $60.00 for a Sierra Complete Pump Kit did the trick.
As for your "dealer" ... walk away... just walk away.

I'll admit a three cylinder engine w/ only two carbs is an odd combination, but it runs well. The only issue I had was the elect. choke button on the MercControler was shot. So, I spliced a horn button onto the Grey wire circuit and it works well. Not Merc's fault just age I guess.
