I would like to know what your guys opinion is on an old 50hp vs a newer 40hp. I currently have a 1982 50hp johnson w/o tilt/trim. It is on a 16ft aluminum blue fin that is very similar to starcrafts. The 50 pushes the boat at about 33mph but takes a little while to get up on plane. I came across a 1999 40hp johnson with tilt/trim for a really good price. What differance in performance can I expect if I was to switch to the 40hp. I don't want to loose to much because the older 50 is about the min that I want.

Personally, I like old things but, you are talking about 17 years difference though. The newer forty is a gutsy motor but I'd stay with the fifty.:)

The newer motor is prop shaft rated for HP, the older one crank shaft rated. The 50 is somewhere around 46 HP on a prop shaft basis, the 40 is likely actually somewhat over 40. Bottom line, not too much difference.
