older evinrude25 hp jumping out of gear

Hi, i have an older (70's) evinrude sportster 25 hp.
when asked to provide more power the engine jumps out of gear.
is there a way of adjusting the clutch or gears without replacing the gears ect. i am a novice to outborads and would love the help. thanks in advance.

do u here a clunking sound and does your motor jerk?

if you have used this motor for a while and it just started, it's 99% the clutch dog. when it's replaced shift quickly, don't ease it in to gear and hear the gears mesh. that meshing sound is the edges of the gear wearing off.

If you can provide the year or model number, we can tell you if turning the clutch dog around, as DWJ posted, is an option.

thanks all. i will provide the numbers etc tomorow. i dont think its cavetating as it happens at low speds also. Not really low though, it runs great up and down the river at idle speeds

ok, where the heck do i find the model number?
the only number i can find anywhere on this engine is on top of the fly wheel. this number is:
384279 D2
any help?
took the boat out yesterday and it ran great up to about 5 mph. then it would jump out of gear. i kept the revs low until it slipped out and would not engage in forward at all. it totally slips in forward now. I had to come back down the river in reverse!
i think perhaps the fw gear is shot. there is some oil seeping from the lower end now also.
How much? and is this a job a complete novice can do?
is it even worth doing?

If the clutch dog is bad it will clunk when it slips.
If it is simply slipping, motor revs but boat slows doesn't accelerate then it may be a spun hub in the prop.
Remove prop and make a line with indeleble marker across the hub.then install and run motor till it slips then check the line.If it slips a prop shop can repair it.They also should be able to check hub as well.

If there are no numnbers on the mounting bracket then
there will be some on a soft plug(a metal guarter like disc inserted in the powerhead).
