Recently, I have run across a couple of mid 70' era GW boats(18 to 22 feet). At a minimum, they need stringer and sole rebuilds, paint, etc. Mostly typical restore work.

Are these mid 70's hull any good? They appear to be hand-laid glass. Somewhat heavy, but seem to be solid.

Looking for a winter project...

They probably are heavily laid up like a lot of boat made in the 60's and 70's. If you like the style, I'd say go for it.

What kind of boat is that in your avitar?

Hi Dan,
There are very few boats that are "worth" restoring in any monetary sense. By the time you factor in all materials and time, you'll likely have much more into it than it's "worth" to anyone willing to buy it.
However, as someone who has restored a few boats, I can say that if you like the look, can't find it in a new boat, and enjoy a fun, rewarding, and satisfying project, then go for it. Plus, when you're done, you'll have an essentially new Grady, for much less than a new Grady!! And you won't have a payment book to go with it!
Enjoy!
- Scott

Re: older grady's worth restoring?

I tried to have someone rebuild the floor in a 86 21' Sea Ray and no one in Southern MAryland up to Deal would do it. We finally found someone who did a terrible job and it was a waiste. I had to give it away. I tried to work on the floor myself but it was hot, itchy, and a general pain. It sounds like you know what you are doing. I saw a new 19' Grady at the dock and the guy said it was 80 thousand so...

Thanks for the thoughts folks. The old GW hulls look sturdy enough. It might may a good winter project if I find the right boat.

After building my 16' boat. I now have "Iwantabiggerboatitis". You all know how that is...

Having gone thru one structural rebuild, I would not hesitate to do it again for the right hull at the right price. However if you have to add major cosmetic update and motor/outdrive work I'd give it a pass.

Thanks. I agree with your comment. The engine and trailer have to be good since they are the only items with any value.

I'm currently doing an 85 seafarer 22 (been ongoing for a few years. I've replaced the stringers, bulkheads and transom (also closed it in for a bracket). If you go for it do yourself a favor and pull the cap and liner, it will save you a considerable amount of time in the long run. Lesson learned.
