I am looking controls for a older johnson 40hp. When I say controls I mean the starter switch it has a old style connector that I have never seen. I am not just looking for a switch but the interface with the motor. It is not the round plug it is square. I will update this fourm as soon as I can get the exact year and model number.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: older johnson 40hp

Is it a rectangular one that plugs into the outside of the lower cowling nearby the shift handle?

There should be a large plate between the transom brackets on the top front portion of the swivel bracket. That plate would have the model and serial numbers.

It was proprietary and moulded into the cable that ran to the boat. Sounds like you'll also need the box at the end of the cable that contained the starter's solenoid, a couple fuses, and the box for the regulator (if applicable). Try TCoutboards.com or marinepartsoutlet.com for a good used one.
I don't see any on ebay at the moment.

The solenoid is not on the motor itself ? I guess I need whatever it take to get the motor running. The motor is not on a boat at the moment.
It has a hand pull start but I have had no success with it.

I have bunch of the round plugs and controls but I have never seen the rectangle plug. I am also wondering if it is like the controls of today where you just plug the controls in and everything is contained in one control.

I have been working on a 1976 Johnson 115hp and know what is contained in the controls for it. Is it the same juat a diffrent interface into the motor?

Re: older johnson 40hp

It's not like that. The throttle/shift controls are separate from the ignition key. Normally the ignition key, choke switch (if applicable), overheat light and ammeter (if applicable) were mounted on a little plate on the dash.

But that's not to say you can't hook up one of those controls to your 1960 engine. It's all the same stuff, just in a different place.

According to my books, the RDSL-22 (1960) has the solenoid in the junction box, not under the hood. They did put it under the hood on later models, and maybe someone "upgraded" yours. It should be the first thing connected to the post on the starter.

Do you have a generator? (It looks like a starter but it's on the port side and connected to the flywheel with a belt)

Re: older johnson 40hp

So what will I need to get just to try and see if this motor runs?

Can get the plate or just the cable to a switch and solenoid?

Or is this something I am going to have to manafacture? I will have to check the motor for the generator. The motor is not at my house right now. I will check and get back as soon as I can.

Thanks again guys

A set of booster cables will start the engine up. Or even a rope wrapped around the flywheel. The engine does not need to be connected to anything to start as it's ignition system is separate from the battery system. You'll have to choke it to stop it though.
If you want to start it with jumper cables, set it up in the water (always run outboards with water supplied, and normal "muffs" don't fit the 40hp). Then connect the jumper cables to the engine - black to engine ground (starter bracket nut or something similar) and the other to the stud with the wire on the starter. Connect the black clamp on the other end of the jumper cables to - on the battery and then touch the red clamp to +. The engine should crank and (hopefully) start.

I usually just make up my own cables & keyswitch wiring but that's me. The wiring harnesses for those engines aren't usually hard to find and aren't expensive. To give you an idea of the complete picture, here's the schematic:

The wiring colours might be a little different, but you get the idea. It looks more complex than it really is - just a solenoid, a couple fuses, and a regular outboard motor keyswitch (like on your 115hp)

Try firing it up and see how she runs. If it's in good shape, I think you'll be pleasently surprised.
Oh, and check out the FAQ Forum (just above the Johnson forum) for "Awakening a Sleeping outboard". Lots of good info in it.

Re: older johnson 40hp

Yes it does, it's located between the armature plate (the thing that turns with the throttle just below the flywheel) and the engine block on the starboard side of the engine. But without the solenoid it will not have any effect - it prevents the solenoid from clicking and cranking the starter if the throttle is set too far forward.

Bill,
I have what you need, and you are welcome to it. I am tripping over it, and need to clean my shop.

The harness is off a '57 RDE-19, 35hp. It's rectangular, plugs into the side of the motor and is secured with a 1/4 x 20 screw/bolt.

On the other end of the harness is the solenoid, cover, etc.

It doesn't look pristine, but works nevertheless.

Email me with the particulars, and it's yours.

Rick
