Looking for the age of a new (new to me ) outboard I just picked up for the aluminum row boat. It is a Johnson 6 hp model 6R-69M ser.# J3059369. I was told the fuel ratio is 50:1, thats pretty musch the normal, but jst want to verify. I got it to replace my 4 hp Force, single cylinder. The Johnson 6 is a twin cylinder, will this really have that much more power ? It apparrently hasn't been used in a few years, but started with only 5 pulls. Lots of oil'y smoke, from storage prep.
Thanks in advance

Jeff.... You have a 1969 6hp Johnson.

OMC has stated that the engine can be run safely on the 50/1 fuel mixture (1pt of 50/1 oil to 6gal of gas). However, that statement has been a matter of dispute for years due to the fact that the powerhead does not consist entirely of roller and/or needle bearings.

Some of the bearings within the powerhead are of a bronze surface, metal to metal nature, which many boaters and mechanics are of the opinion that such bearings demand the older 24/1 ratio (1qt of 50/1 oil to 6gal of gas).

I've seen many of those engines being run on the 50/1 fuel/oil mixture for many hours per year, for years on end which have encountered no lubrication problems.... however, the choice of the two above mixtures will have to be your judgement call. Whichever gives you peace of mind.

After having an engine sit for a few years, usually the carburetor will foul. If you encounter a problem with idle, hesitation when applying throttle... clean and rebuild the carb.
