Older OMC Tilt/trim guage not working.

As stated, the tilt & trim work fine, but the guage always show 0.
I have the book now, but doesn't mention anything about the guage in the tilt/trim section. It's (from indications here) the mid 80's sterndrive 800. Any pointers as to where the "sender" or whatever is located?

That outdrive should never be run in anything but the fully down position ever.

And never without water going to it even for 5 seconds.

Never saw no trim gauge on a stringer.

Cobra yes stringer no.

Hey Chief, my 84 OMC 800 stringer (actually an 83 model year) has a trim level and guage. Even though the outdrive doesn't trim like the other outdrives, it does still have the trim. Now, with that said, I don't know where the sender is located...mine works so I never thought about looking for it. I can try and find out in my manual though, if I remember to look. What year precisely and what size motor?

Then it will be in the engine bay maybe located on the actuator.

Thanks for looking Ed, I'll keep digging through my book as well. Here's a thread to half-***** answer your question about which year, as I don't know.. This is my I/O combo.

The engine is a 260, that's the only thing I'm positive about.. :D

I'll not run it dry or up, just wanted to have the guage working. I'm not positive, I'll look again today, but I think the guage says Tilt. Leading me to believe it's main function is to keep you from destroying your outdrive... Very nice when the kids may be driving the boat once in a while.

I looked at your old thread again and at the pictures but could not see the front mounts, as you look at the front mounts is there a device to lower and raise the motor in the front ?

If yes MAYBE a sender unit is attached to the actuator.

They only used the tilt option i believe for the last couple of years of production, it was 23 years ago so hard for me to remember exactly what years.

You did read in the old thread the info i gave you on oil and filters?

Yes the trim is intergrated in the front motor mount. And I did read your info in the other thread, thanks for that. I managed to pump the oil out yesterday with the changer. What a PITA....

I also found a functional diagram of the trim circuit in the very back of the book. It shows a trim sending unit, but does not show where it's at. As long as it resembles the pic, and the wire colors are correct I think I can find it.

After you got it running and everything is kewl there may be a way around pumping that oil out the way you just did it.

But that for latter.

Re: Older OMC Tilt/trim guage not working.

Well I found the trim sender, but according to this book, it's the 2.5 and 3.0 litre version. Either way, I get variable resistance across it to ground, and I get variable resistance at the guage, although not very smooth, but I would think any changes would have been reflected in the guage even if they were erratic. Guage never moves unless I put 12v to it, then it pegs, and slowly settles back to zero.
And the guage shows tilt & trim. 0-3 (green) for trim, above 3 (yellow) tilt.
Wonder what my chances are of finding a guage..

As to the oil. Maybe on a warmer day it would have been better, IDK.. This pump would work for about 4 seconds, then suck air. I'd have to pull it out about 6 inches, count to 3 and put it back in for another 4 seconds of pulling oil. Is there an adapter to go from the plastic hose size up to garden hose fitting that's on top of the dip tube? I think is was sucking air back down the tube because it wasn't a tight fit.

Re: Older OMC Tilt/trim guage not working.

Is it cold bye you sure it is.

Oil is like molasis in the cold if it was warm it world have flowed better, you were pulling it faster then it was flowing to the plug.

Look close at the block see a hole thats got a plug in it about 1/3 of the way up.

Thats for a dipstick. You could remove the oil drain plug with the drain on it that you just sucked the oil up and put a regular plug maybe 3/4 inch correct thread on it. And install a dipstick in the hole that is plugged right now.

Understand. then when you want to drain the oil you pull the drain plug like in a car.

I think it's the sender check the ground and the end of the wire.

Re: Older OMC Tilt/trim guage not working.

Okay, I got the pages scanned in with the info for the trim (troubleshooting and such). But it's saved in .pdf and is way too big for the size limits for this site, and I don't have my Acrobat version on this computer that can edit it. I'll get the three pages I scanned converted to pics and post them tomorrow. Sorry about that.
