Realitively new to this forum but have learned a lot. When I posted my first question had an answer back within ten minutes so I know this works.
Have been dealing with a 1965 WestBend 45 hp. Was warned parts could be expensive. Have a mechanic working on this and when he took off the bottom end he figured it wasn't worth it. Told me it looked like the Titanic it was that rusted. Apparently someone tried to putty the crack instead of weld it. Appeared it was left in the water and the rust was beyond repair.
Through this forum it seems I'll get the engine water worthy.
The site found me Franz of FranzMarine. Sent him an email and he came right back to me with an available rebuilt bottom end for $400. We've been in touch on a regular basis for the past week or so arranging shipment. Having a part shipped out of Missouri to the Toronto area and getting a lot of help.
My mechanic tells me the top end is very workable so without the help of this forum I would have given up.
Turns out it shouldn't cost me too much after all. At least not as much as I first feared.
If you have an old engine and need information or parts I can't recommend this guy enough. He was quick to get on the phone with my guy in a different country and explain to him what to do in order to salvage what he could instead of trying to sell him a new part.
Hope this note can help someone. Previous posts certainly helped me.

Re: Older outboard help

I'm glad you were able to get the part you needed. Good luck with the rest of your restoration! :D
