Oldtimer won’t tell this fish tale
By Norman Miller/ Metrowest Daily News
Thursday, April 27, 2006

There is an old saying - a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work. That may not be true for Daniel DePratti.

DePratti’s 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada, along with his fishing boat, rolled into Natick’s Lake Cochituate yesterday, and police Sgt. Paul Thompson said the vehicle is probably a complete loss.

“This is not an uncommon occurrence,” said Thompson. “He was checking to see if he was lined up, and when he opened the door to take a look, he fell out.”

The problem, Thompson said, was the SUV was still in reverse and the trailer with the boat helped pull the vehicle about 15 feet from shore, where it came to a rest at a little after 9:30 a.m.

DePratti, 79, of Natick, suffered minor cuts to his head and arm in the fall. He was treated at the scene. He did not want to comment.

“When I got here, I didn’t know if there was someone in there,” said park employee Ray Doucette, who said vehicles end up in the lake three or four times a year. “This guy is here every day. He has good luck fishing.”

A fellow fisherman, Les Gediman, of Framingham, said he sees DePratti out there fishing quite often.

“Last week, the fella caught two fish, and he gave me one,” said Gediman. “He’s a nice guy.”

Two members of the Natick Fire Department dive team swam out to the submerged SUV and hooked up chains to it so a tow truck could pull the vehicle from the water

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=136796&format=text

Yea, but you would be surprised at how many people can't use them to back up.
EDIT: No you wouldn't, you have been around enough to have seen this also.

My aunt (64), did something like that.
As she was leaving one day, she saw a bag sitting in the driveway that she had forgot to load in the Blazer.
So she backed over next to it, opened the door, and leaned over to pick it up.
This would be no small feat, as she is only 5'5" and kind of round in shape.

Blazer still in reverse, she fell out, and managed to back over her own leg, breaking the ankle.
Blazer continued on, crossing the road and hitting the neighbors car.

She "doesn't know how it happened."

When I'm 79, and if I decide to give my rig a good soaking, then by golly I guess I will :p :D Glad he didn't get run over trying to catch it.
