This is my first posting and first boat, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a 1985 OMC stern drive with the 2.5L motor. My problem is the motor will start and run for about a minute or two than die. It will start back up right away, but after doing this 2 to 3 times than it will quit abruptly like it is seized up. It will turn over right after the abrupt stop. We did this for about 5 or 6 times to make sure we had fuel and spark and on the last time it quit there was a slight grinding noise coming from the back of the motor or the intermediate housing. Any ideas!!!! Thanks for any help.

Since that noise is not encouraging ,drain the oil from the upper, lower, and intermediate gearcases ,and tell us what you see .

We drained the intermediate housing and found metal filings. What would have went out inside there to cause the filings and where would the best and cheapest place to be to get parts. How hard is it to pull the housing and repair. Thanks for any help.
