Hi all,

I've got a 1978 OMC 140 with stringer outdrive that I've just finished rebuilding and re-installing. The alternator is old and in bad shape so I am replacing it to make everything nice and new.
The current alternator looks like this one here: http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=ARC40152&ptype=&Engine=&Model=
and it has an external regulator I believe that is bolted to a plate underneath the manifold.

My question is: what alternator should I be replacing this unit with? I was thinking of doing away with the external alternator and replacing it with a more modern, internally regulated alternator. I believe this can be done with some simple wiring modifications. Am I right? If so, does anyone have part numbers or model numbers for some alternators that would work for my application with this style mounting bracket?

Thanks in advance,

-Ryan

What is involved in converting the wiring from my externally regulated alternator to this one?

Thanks,

Any other more part numbers out there for a more commonly found alternator? I'm trying to source it locally..

Thanks in advance,
