While I was killing time the other day, I stopped onto CL. I saw a post that said, "OMC140 seized, and outdrive"
Dude is askin $200 for this. While I think that this would be a great deal, I also am wondering about the condition of the outdrive. I dont care too much about the engine, I know that I would be able to get a few good spare parts off of it. The main thing would be the outdrive. I saw somewhere, someone was asking about $300 of just the upper housing.
I would love to have an outdrive sitting in the garage, to take apart and learn from, and to have parts. Problem is, I am still waiting to winterize because of cash flow. (I will be having this done this week, hopefully Monday or Tuesday)
What do you guys think? Would this outdrive be a good investment? Something for a learning curve(thats not the workin one on the boat), and just for the parts(whatever is good)?
Also, would a sezied engine cause problems with the outdrive? Maybe not a direct problem, but something that questions the care given to it?

Thanks guys

As a learning experience it has value only if you are interested in OMC Stringers which have not been made for years. What you learn would be of no value in the future except if you had a wide variety of spare parts. About the only value here would be for the parts. Disassemble it completely and sell everything on E-Bay. You would likely net more that way than selling major assemblies.

Re: OMC 140 and Stringer 400 Spare

OK, I see what your saying. But the major reason would be to have spare parts for me. My boat works great, I just like to know that I can work on something if I have to. I know that finding stringer parts is very hard to do. And then to have alittle bit of experience on the drive, because not many people work on them anymore. I have car mechanic experience, but very little experience on this boat. I know that somethings require specialty tools, but that would be a different bridge to cross if/when this happens.

Re: OMC 140 and Stringer 400 Spare

If I had to choose between paying for winterizing a working, running boat or buying a spare I/O set-up to play with, I know where my money would go. Why don't you winterize yourself and save the cash. In my opinion, buying the spare is not a good idea. You asked.
Of course if you don't hurry up and get the winterizing done, you might need the spare.

Re: OMC 140 and Stringer 400 Spare

I'm south of you by about 700 miles ... so the winterizing is easy enough to do myself. But, I've gone the spare route and made a couple of purchases to have on hand for when (not if) the ole' stringer starts giving me issues. As to if the $200 is worth it - you'll kinda' have to take a bit of a chance there. If just one or the other the gear cases is good, then you've done well. If the whole drive works - you've really scored. If the unit doesn't work, but you can scavange parts off it when needed - you've probably still done well.

Re: OMC 140 and Stringer 400 Spare

Thanks guys.
I plan on taking the boat in Monday or Tuesday to get her winterized. The shop says they will look at a small oil leak that she has. I also want them to give a good look at it, to tell me what the guys I bought it from did not. I want to make sure that everything is ok with it, and the job gets done complete and correctly.
As for the other spare set-up, I would like to get it, based on what you have said. Even if I can only get one or two good parts, it will most likely be a great deal. I will just have to see if it is still available when I can afford it.
Maybe next time I decide to buy a boat(I know there will be a next time!), I wont spend all the money we saved for other stuff, on the boat!!
Thanks again guys. Ill let ya`ll know what happens....
