OMC 2.3 mallory distributer ?'s

Engine will not start. While checking the spark on #1 cylinder, I notice the timing mark erratically moving around. When it would be near 8' BTDC it would have 1 quick fire, but not start. Then the mark would dissappear, either back fire through carb or briefly stop cranking. Obviously mis-firing, right? Cap, rotor, points and condenser were replaced less than 20 hrs ago. However, I noticed something strange. While cranking the engine with out the cap on, the rotor shaft would not spin smoothly. By that I mean it would pause or hesitate approximatly every 270 degrees. I can take the rotor shaft in my fingers and rotate it about 1/2 an inch and it will only return about half way on its own. Shouldn't the springs return it all the way??? And shouldn't there be more resistance anyway?

One more question, Is it normal to have spark while cranking the engine with the key off, using a remote starter button?

Re: OMC 2.3 mallory distributer ?'s

I pulled the distributer and it turns out the gears are a bit chewed up on both the distributer and drive gear in the engine. It's apparent both need to be replaced. What would have caused it? It has sufficient oil. The timing belt has not jumped-the marks still line up. And does this warrant a complete tear down? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Those chewed up pieces of metal are thoroughly distributed everywhere in your engine.....oil passages, bearings, imbedded in oil pump gears, etc.

I think the answer to the complete teardown question is pretty obvious.

Metal is heavier than oil.
Don't be freaking the guy out.

The big chunks will settle out of the oil and lay in the pan. It's the fine stuff that takes out the oil pump that causes the slow death of an engine.
I personally would take the engine apart and MAKE SURE everything was ok. Even if my opinion "Freaks the guy out".
Facts are facts, some times you just have to deal with bad news.

IMHO; other than the GM boat.
I have, in mopars; broken the oil pump shaft, driven 20 more miles until a rod bearing spun( a lesson- when the oil gauge is broke, replace it).
I have stripped the dist gear in drag racing(but the hardened gear and pin).

Both engines lasted until I retired them.
