OMC 2.3 sputter

I am about to purchase a 1988 Bayliner Capri with an OMC 2.3 in it. The engine idles a little rough. When you crank the throttle hard and fast it will sputter (it backfired the first time it was revved up) at low speeds. Once it gets past the low RPM's it runs smoothly. The boat shop reccomended a carb rebuild, any other thoughts? Thanks. They did the points, condensors and plugs tune up. The mechanic there also said fiddling with air and idle screw didn't help any.

Also one more question. Is there a conversion kit from points to CDI ignition for these and where can I find them?

Re: OMC 2.3 sputter

sounds as though rebuild might be called for. do a web search for pertronix. all the posts suggest the pertronix II is the way to go.

Re: OMC 2.3 sputter

thanks. We are gonna check the timing first. And if that doesnt solve anything we will try a rebuild kit.

Re: OMC 2.3 sputter

rebuild the carb I think is what he meant. If it idles rough at the correct idle speed, then the idle screws maybe be gummed up. If it hiccup, burps and farts on acceleration, then its an accelerator pump problem. A rebuild would do nothing, but improve it.

If you are technically and mechanically inclined, then this is an easy task, and very cheap ~$30 for the kit. Otherwise, its about $300, depends on the marina.

we can do that rebuild no promblem.. thnaks for the tip on the idle screw... When accelerating it purrs likea kitten it just right off the very bottom its a little rough. We will throw a timing light on it first. Then go from there. And possibly get apertronix ignitor 2 kit.
