OMC 2.3 Timing

I have a 1988 OMC 2.3 Cobra. Sometimes while accelerating the engine will back fire or hesitate. I am wondering what should the timing be set at, at idle?

Anyone? It appears to be at 4 Degrees BTDC right now.

PATIENCE Stub. timing is 10 btdc. like previously posted. Your hesitation is probably fuel related. Prob. needs a set of points too.

Wait ill have to check on that(seriously) I think its 10degrees after tdc.

RD the points and condensors are fresh.... The hesitation is pretty consistent sometimes worse then others. I'm not saying it is the timing id just like to make sure its to spec.

I wont be able to check till I go back to work tommorro. Doesnt your engine have a tag/ label on the flame arrestor cover that can tell you firing order, plug type and timing etc?

No tag, label or anything with that info. Need to pick up a manual for this. Just got the boat and all the shops are closed for the holiday weekend. Thanks for checking RK.

After you set the timimg to specs, recheck it a few times after you run boat in water, if the timing has moved, check the roll pin in the dist drive gear. Dist were replace in some of these engines 88/90, because of dist drive gear silppage.

The firing order is 1-3-4-2 with a timing of 10 deg BTDC at 600-650 RPM. If you still have points the gap should be .018 with a dwell angle of 36 +/- 2.
