Howdy,

You can probably install a Pertronix ignition system on it. In reality it's pretty much a waste of money. points will work just fine if adjusted correctly.

You can file them etc.... When a Pertronix system fails, you have to replace it. A little hard to do in the middle of the lake unless you keep a spare on hand...

Connecting the shift interrupt (esa) system is problematic too....not impossible but problematic.

IMHO it's just not worth it to switch.

Rick

Have you tried this? Any luck?
How often do you need to adjust the points. I have the same exact motor
that I just bought. The guy mentioned I could change it. I'm not really an engine guy but I'll try simple things since I didn't pay much for the boat and I could use it as a learning tool.

Is the points only used during ignition? What symptoms would lead you to believe that the points need adjusting?

Thanks again!

I changed my 1989 3ltr omc over to pointless ignition ,What a difference. With the old points I had issues,Since I changed to electronic points it's been great,Yes if they let you down you need to replace them. But I keep the points in the tool box and can put them back in if I have to.I've owned this boat for 5 years and always had point issues(slowly losing their gap).Since I changed to electronic it has run like a top,the best money I have ever spent on the boat.

Shimano - did you notice a different in performance? Is it only in the starting? I am not too familiar with what each part of the engine does. I also have the points.. How often did you have to service the points before? What are the symptoms to know they are loosing their gap?

Thanks,
sean

Did you lube the cam in the distributor? I never had a problem with points losing their gap. How did you measure the loss of gap? Were you using a dwell meter?

The only way you would notice a loss of performance is if your dwell did change. If the gap got lower, the dwell would increase and it would retard your timing. Again, I have never seen this with any boat I have owned.
