OMC 2.3l Ford Cooling/oil in H20 question

This is my first boat and am wondering if its possible to get water in the oil by over-pressuring the cooling system using ear muffs and a garden hose? I read in a service manual that you should not pressurize the cooling system. I did get a milky oil mixture after I did this. I then flushed the oil system with a 2 part mixture of oil, transmission fluid and diesel fuel. I changed the oil and it does'nt appear to be getting and more water in the oil. I changed the way I am using the earmuffs. I have a five gallon bucket and i run the water hose into the bucket then with another hose use a siphoning effect to feed the cooling input fins on the stern drive. This way I now have only gravity pressure on the cooling water. Just to make sure I did'nt have a blown head gasket I did a leak down check on all four cylinders. All were at 10 percent or less leakage.

Uh, why don't you just turn down the spigot to reduce the water pressure?

Thanks for the reply. WHEN is it enough water pressure to cool the boat, but to much pressure to flood the oil system? Also, I was really interested to see if anyone else has experienced over pressuring the water system enough to get water in the oil. I'm not sure if I still need to look into the water in the oil problem during the winter. I can't run the boat to check it now that it is winterized.

Ayuh,...

While I Don't do OMCs,....

You shouldn't be able to over-pressurize the cooling system enough to cause water in the oil....

Bond-O said it, you shouldn't be able to over presurize the system.How old is the motor? If you have water in the oil and the motor has been covered,then you will probably need to have the manifold and riser replaced.Jerry

The motor is 1988 vintage, I'm not sure of the hours. When you say manifold, I assume you mean the exhaust manifold. I did a leak check on all cylinders and they all were fine. I guess the leak test will not test this condition. Is there a test that will verify that the riser and manifold is bad? By the way, I had no water that I could see in the cylinders. Thanks.

Just an up-date and to let others know what I found: I disconnected the riser and exhaust manifold. When inspecting the riser gasket, I found it was badly disintegrated. I found water on the cylinder closest to the riser. I suspect when I connected the hose with high pressure, it pushed the water through that bad gasket. The manifold and riser seem to be in exceptionally good shape for its age...very little rust. In fact the manifold and riser are built like a tank, very thick cast iron. I'm going to replace the manifold and riser gaskets. I had another topic out about replacing the manifold. It costs $510 with no after market parts.... so; we'll put her back together and hopefully get another 5 or 10 years out of her. Thanks for all the help and I hope this will help others with the same problem. :)

Just make sure that all mating surfaces are CLEAN AND TRUE.
