I have a omc 12/24 volt trolling motor 1996. I believe it is 41lbs thrust. My problem is all of a sudden the second speed setting does not work. My first speed (small arrow) works fine on both 12 and 24 volt settings, also the third speed ( large arrow )works fine on both. But the second speed does not work on either.
Batteries are good.
Wiring from batteries to motor is also good.
dont know too much about trolling motors but I am thinking about taking it apart to look for- i'm not really sure, loose switch? bad terminal?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the problem is intermittent, its likely a dirty or worn switch contact. If the second speed does not work at all and switch tests good, the speed coil is toast.

Re: omc 2 speeds out

Don't know on that particular motor. Some are located in the foot controller, some are located in the motor housing. Some are in a complete module and others are separate. Check your foot controller. If the wires from the speed selector go to another module or some electrical parts that look like stretched springs, that's the speed coil. If the wires simply head of to the top of the motor, they are located in the motor housing. Getting the parts may be more of a problem than actually replacing them.

The same thing just happened to my oil OMC.. Except I lost the med. and fast speed settings...

I first replaced the speed switch in the foot pedal but nothing changed... I talked to an old marine guy that seemed to know a lot about the motor, he says I have lost two of the speed coils in the lower unit... He said it is difficult to replace (if you can even find the parts for it).

Thanks for the info again, started looking for coils and you were both right, hard to find. I will give it a little more time looking bebore i will be forced to buy a new one ( ouch ) not in the budget.
If i cannot fix mine not sure what to buy - motorguide or minn kota
20 foot fish and ski (used only for fishing though) with a 200hp-probably need at least 65lbs thrust.
