Another task I'm doing is rewiring and organizing the connections in the center console (almost 80% progress now). I'm doing this after all the mess due to the gas and water tanks replacement.

I will post some pictures soon.

In the meantime I have some wiring color code questions.

I have investigated a bit (other postings on iboats and other forums) about the ignition switch connections.

Could you please verify if I'm correct with my harness coming from the engine to the ignition switch (OMC, 225HP 1994).

Also, could you please provide info on those cables I don't know:

1) Black with yellow strip: ignition module kill (goes to M post)

2) Another black, no strip: ?????? (is this a ground to kill the ignition module?) (goes to other M post???)

3) Red with purple strip: +12V feed (goes to B post)

4) Tan : goes to horn (overtemperature signal)

5) Purple: to horn (from VRO alarms??)

6) Gray: pulse signal from engine, goes to tachometer

7) Yellow with red strip: this is the feed to the starter solenoid, so it goes to the S post)

8) Purple with white strip: this is the feed to the choke (it goes to C post)

Another question: could you please indicate me the purpose/connection of each cable from the trim/tilt harness? I have a single bundle with these cables:

a) White with tan strip
b) Green with white strip
c) Red with white strip
d) Lite blue with white strip
e) Black with tan strip

thanks !

Hi Kesh....

2) Black (no strip) wire....yes, goes to the other "M" post on ignition switch.

5) Purple to horn is power to the horn.

8) Purple/white stripe is choke lead...goes to "C" on ignition switch.

TNT:

Red/white stripe is power to switch.
Green/White stripe is down.
Blue/white stripe is up.
The white/tan stripe and black/tan stripe are signals, I think, from the TNT tilt reostat to the TNT gage.

'kay Kesh, lemme see.
Solid purple is switched 12vdc from the ignition switch. Everything else you have looks correct.
This should help with the rest.

one more question:

The ignition switch has two M posts. One is for the black/yellow strip. The other M is for the Black/no-strip. Should I ground the M that has the blac/no-strip ?? It seemed to me that it was grounded....(I think the black cable from the horn was also attached to this M post where the black/no-strip wire was attached)

The black/yellow stripe wire goes to a "M" terminal by itself. Grounding this wire will not let the engine run cause it grounds out the power pack to stop the engine.

That's a neat picture Hooty.

Re: OMC 225HP, 1994 wiring codes

oops, sorry... maybe I wasn't clear when making the question... The question is as follows:

The Black/yellow-strip goes to one M post. It goes alone in that post. That's clear for me.

My question is about the other black cable (the one with no strip). It goes to the other M terminal. I tested this black cable with the multimeter and it is grounded. In fact, in this M terminal I remember that two cables were connected, the black/no-strip and a black cable coming from the horn. So it seemed to me that the second M was just a ground.

In other words, I'm thinking that the black/yellow-strip cable is the magneto kill, and the other black/no-strip cable is just a ground. So, putting one in one M and the other in the other M just kills the motor when the magneto kill cable makes contact with ground. In my boat, the horn ground was just connected to the same M were the black/no-strip cable is connected because that is a very near ground available.

Could you please confirm?? (this is urgent, as I'm re-wiring the ignition switch on my own, and want to be 100% sure).

Yeah, the Clymer book I have for my Johnson outboard has those pics in it. They're worth their weight in gold when you need a reference.

Sorry, Kesh. I don't have the book for your motor's year in it.

Confirmed. Solid black wires are ground (-) throughout the wiring harness. The solid black wire and any other component needing ground (the high temp horn, instrument lights, etc.) go to one "M" terminal. The black/yellow wire is the only wire on the other "M" terminal.

c/6
Hooty

URGENT !

OBJ, Hooty

In the second post to this topic OBJ said:
" 5) Purple to horn is power to the horn. "

I connected directly the purple cable from the harness to the horn. However, my mechanic said that it also needs to be tied to the A post in the ignition switch to receive 12V when you turn the key. My mechanic has been testing the boat and he added a cable from horn (from the post where the purple cable is attached) to the A post on the ignition switch, and now the horn is working normally (at least it beeps when you turn the key). Obviously the Horn receives 12V, but my question is where does it go the purple cable in the harness? It is receiving 12V too, but I don't know for what purpose.

Could you please confirm if this is correct?? I thougt that the purple cable just had to be connected to the horn, and nothing to do with the ignition switch. In my mind, I cant understand why give 12V power to the harness through that purple cable. Maybe it is needed, but as I have no manual, it is hard to figure out.

Please provide me with comments... I need to be sure everything is ok and that the "bridge cable" that the mechanic added is correct.

Just saw your post Kesh.
The hi-temp horn needs a hot wire (purple) to one side. The other hi-temp goes to the hi-temp switch and I sounds like you've got that working. The purple wire in the harness does connect to "A" terminal on the switch. It goes to the voltage regular but I'm not sure why.

c/6
Hooty
