I have a problem with my recently purchased 1976 Cobalt 19' Bowrider. It is equipped with an OMC 235 sterndrive. Initial checks were all good, so we put to the water. After thoroughly warming her up and checking for leaks, we got underway. I accelerated very slowly, up to 3,500 RPMs. After cruising for about 10 mins I attempted to get to 4,000 RPMs. Something slipped when I hit 3,900 RPMs allowing the motor to over-rev. I quickly corrected this, bringing her to an idle. The situation repeated itself two more times, all at about the same RPM. Reading a few of the posts here on iboats, I am thinking that I may have a prop with a slipped hub. Is there any other possible causes for this slip at higher RPMs? There was no noticeable noise associated with the slip. Seperate, yet may be impacting this. My tilt/trim is non-operational. The gauge indicates fully up. I plan to start running through the system to determine that cause of that failure. My thought is that the tilt in the up position may be causing for additional torque working against the prop or something.

Welcome to iboats! This is a terrific place with plenty of people willing to help out fellow boaters. (Even us OMC guys! :D ) Most likely you have a spun hub. It could be possible that with the trim being up too high the prop is cavitating (sucking in air). If there is no noticeable change in the sound from the drive when it revs up then probably not. Try a different prop and you'll know real quick if that was it. What kind of trim do you have? Is the a jack screw at the front of the motor or hydraulic rams at the motor mounts? Might be able to help you out with that too if you can't figure it out. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Well, I swapped out the prop with the spare I found under one of the seats. I can't tell if the previous prop has a damaged hub (no smell, no noticeable damage). I've been looking into the tilt/trim. I see a mechanical pump on the front starboard side of the motor that appears to have a few small steel lines heading back to the mounts. I'll look closer and see what's going on with that later.

I have the original OMC owners manual and the original Cobalt manual. I know that the prop that I swapped out was a 14 x 17. The manual calls for a 14 x 13 or a 14 x 15. I have the EO #'s for both. Is there a company out there that might be able to cros reference those OE #'s in order to get me the correct OE prop?

Thanks!

That's the same hydraulic trim setup that I have so if you have any questions I'd happy to try to help. I'm running a 14x18 on my 18 1/2' Cal-Glass and it's just about perfect for me. You may have to try a couple of different props to find out which one is right for your boat.
You probably won't be able to tell if the hub is spun just by looking at it. Have you tried running with the new prop yet? If it works fine with the new one then you'll know that the original one is spun. You can have a prop shop re-hub the original one.

Also, here's a link to one of my threads with some basic stringer info you may find helpful: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=501126
