I've been reading this forum for months and I think it's excellent. Many experts here and it's very much appreciated. Helped me a lot. Didn't stop me from buying a 1979 OMC though. I'm thick.

First trip in the 1979 Thunderbird F20CL with the OMC 260 and the 800 outdrive I had a little overheating trouble.

Putted around for about an hour and everything was good, then let it run at 4K about 10 minutes. It got a little hot, about 200/210 on the guage and the oil pressure started dropping. I shut it down to idle and watched the guages more carefully and everything seemed to normalize. Oil pressure slowly came back up and the motor cooled down to around 170/180.

I have some ideas of what to look for but wondered if any of the experts here have any advice. I do have the Seloc manual.

The low oil pressure really scared me and I don't want to see that again. I'm afraid I did some damage to it.

I used the boat again and pulled some kids, never ran it more than 3K and it did get a little warm, maybe 190 or so, but the oil pressure stayed around 30/40 psi, so I wasn't too worried.

I'm sure I have some issues, but don't know where to start looking.

Thanks for helping this stone cold nooby.:)

Thanks Bondo,

How does the oil pressure relate to engine temp?

Can I trust the old guages in this thing? I've seen here where people say to put a mecanical guage on it to test it.

Also, here's another question. The tilt motor works ok and of course I've read many of the horror stories on this aspect of the boat. The previous owner warned me to just tap the switch as to NOT run the tilt motor against the stops. sounds reasonable, so..tap the swith for lifting it and it takes a few time to get the drive up to hauling position, tap the switch to lower it and that's all it takes to drop it to the bottom of the travel.

That seems odd to me.
