OMC 2hp water pump

I have recently bought a 1984 Johnson 2 hp kicker that was in sad shape. Overhauled the carb and magneto. Compression seems good. Got hot after about 10 minutes running so I ordered a water pump kit from a dealer. When I dropped the lower end to replace it I found that it didn't fit. The impeller was too small for the housing and quite a bit smaller than the partially disintegrated one I took out. Can you believe there is an impeller too small for a 2 horse? The part number on the kit box has been obscured twice. The number written in is 387362. I'm going to take it back, of course, but I still need a correct pump kit for my engine. Any advice out there? I would really appreciate any help, particularly from an old OMC pro.

JB

Hi J.B.,
The part no. 387362 is a correct no. for the kit. The impeller no. is 382221, this no.maybe cast in the rubber. I didn't pull a part, but in picture it looks big.hehe

...have fun...corm

Re: OMC 2hp water pump

Thanks for the info, Corm. Sorry for the delay in responding, I had to have some emergency repairs to my fuel pump. I did find the source of the problem, though. The 387362 pump kit fits a later bottom end that has a smaller diameter, taller pump. Human error somewhere down the line listed it as a replacement for the '84. The 382221 impeller, however, does fit and is now in the motor. Yet to be tested, soon as the Doc will allow.

JB
