OMC 3.0 install and gear question

Hey guys I've been having 2 problems. One is it skips once and a while under power. It took me a long time to figure out how to adjust the linkage properly. I think my problem has been shifter detent height. I've got it written down, but I recently adjusted the detent height to allow more forward engagement. Only does it in forward. I had taken the drive apart prior and basically no wear, dog looked good, gears ok. It's only skipped a couple of times since. I'll inspect the gears again. So if I need new gears I'll have to get the assembly checked for shim sizes right? Also my main problem is installing the drive. The universal assembly is so damn hard to push through the bellows. I've sanded some of the rubber and everything. It's a daunting task to say the least. If it was to just slide in I'd be a happy man. I haven't heard of this. The first time I installed about 12 years ago I tapped on the water pump shaft. This worked fine, but pushed the shaft too far in for the waterpump. I've since fixed that (never do that!! sucks to fix!!). Anyone else have that problem. I installed a new bellows years ago, it works fine, but is there different brands with different thicknesses? Any help could be appreciated!!

It's probably out of alignment. You can get the tool on ebay. Yes, the bellows have been redesigned, but if it's out of alignment a new bellows won't do much good. If it's jumping out of gear, the shift cable needs to be adjusted. You don't need a new gearset just yet. But, keep running it with the cable out of adjustment & you will.

It's not a alignment problem. Can't get the bellows through easily. I'm not getting to the point of the drive shaft into the coupling. I'm going to try to install the housing on the drive prior and just slide the cable and bolt on with the 2 side allen bolts. I'm going to order a new bellows since it's been 14 years since replacement.

Well I've got other problems so I started a new post, but I did get a new bellows and YES the new one works perfect. I wonder if I was sold the wrong one all those years ago.. It's tough to slide over the universals with only the bellows in my hand.. New one even has some room! That's the only good news. :(
