OK, so i took the drive off the boat and dissassembled the unit in preperation for replaceing the shift cable. the cable had broken right at the pulley assembly on the shift housing. once i had the whole thing apart i wanted to make sure i could shift it from R to N to F by hand. how difficult should it be to go through the shifting sequence? i can get it to go into all three positions, however, it takes a little force. should this be a smooth one finger type of operation if correct or should it take a little force to complete the full range?

1983 omc 3.0 l
engine model 302STHRCTR
engine serial J764983
drive model 982740
drive serial J313762

any advice on this or what to do next would be greatly appreciated as i do not want to reassemble if i might need to do further repairs.

thanks guys

Hows the cables at the throttle? Can you see where the cables that connect to the throttle, there are 2. The ends ok?

One goes to the carb. one goes to the shift converter. They in good shape?

It the original shift cable from the throttle to the shift converter?

It the original cable to the carb?

Did you remove the shift throttle cable from the converter?

There should be some force required. But not a great amount of force.

You can try shooting corrosion pro on the throttle backside where it all shifts.

And some on the pivot points of the converter and cable ends there while operating the throttle back and forth.

Keep us posted.

right now the lower and upper are off the boat. I was trying to shift the lever by hand where the shift housing and cables connect. I was trying to verify that all was working well before complete reassembly to avoid any additional teardown. it seems to shift and fully engage all the gears with just a little pressure so i think i will go ahead and try to reassemble in the morning and go from there.
thanks

Seems you have it under control. My out drive is off also same model as yours.

Freekin water pump shaft stripped out. Left me stranded on the water for the second time.

First time coupler stripped out.

Did you replace the water pump impeller while you have the drive apart?

Check the splines real good on the shafts. Mine were good 4 years ago.

Today had to order a new one.

good luck
