I just got the new head on it and the flywheel tightened up (see previous threads).

It doesn't idle as smoothly as I'd like, but it maybe normal a push-rod and carbed 4-cyclinder.

I idled out of the harbor fine for about 15 minutes. I took it up to 35 for about 5 minutes and slowed down to 5 or so. I then gave it half throttle and it hesitated so bad I thought it was going to die, so I dropped the throttle back to an idle. I tried this several times, but I couldn't get it back up to speed.

It ran the great for the first 20 minutes or so.

I pulled the fuel pump and where the return line enters the pump is full of orange/brown greasy gunk. I think it was completely plugged. Could that be it?

I'm going to buy a pump today. I wouldn't mind having a spare even if that isn't the problem.

Or could it be the coil? I pull one from the junkyard to try it out if the fuel pump isn't the problem.

BTW, the diaphram in the fuel pump was intact, but it needs to be replaced since pieces (like the outer layer disintegrated) of it have plugged up the brass carb filter.

Sounds like water to me. Do you have a water seperating fuel filter? If not, you really need to get one.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to pump the water out of the tank and get the carb cleaned and rebuilt.

Yea, just replaced a couple weeks ago. Cut it open and nothing in it.

The gas is about a year old. Union 76 Mid-Grade.

Ct, The marine fuel pump is designed in case of failure of the diaphram ,to put fuel back down the carb throat by means of a tube run directly from the pump to the carb. This prevents gas from ending up in the bilge and BOOM. If there is any liquid (gas) present in that tube the pump has failed. The greasey brown liquid you describe is probably water contaminated fuel. A seperator is needed as Don S said. What is the ethanol content of your current fuel?8)
Note Marine fuel pumps may have a dual diaphram.
see if you can look one up here:

It skips right over the 90-94 OMC's, so they don't seem to have it either.

I'm starting to think it is the coil, since the diaphragm is not leaking.

There wasn't any fuel in that clear tube.

Also the seperator is brand new (1 hour on it).
