I have a 1989 Bayliner Capri, with an OMC 3.0L. I recently rebuilt the engine and came across something that I thought wouldn't be a problem, but I want confirmation from someone who has seen this before. When I had my crank machined I bought the bearing set from the shop that did the machine work. When I got the bearings home, I noticed that the oil hole in the main bearing did not line up with the hole in the block. There is however A slot in the bearing that could let oil through, but it is not as big as the hole. I decided to give it a shot.
Now I had never heard this boat run before I rebuilt it, and I have a bunch of car experience, but this is my first boat. After dealing with several issues trying to get the engine to run (none the least of which was getting the valves adjusted, but that is a different topic) I finally got it running. After I got the valves adjusted to make the clackity-clack go away, I thought the engine was loud. Now I don't have much boat experience, and I know that even though the 3.0 is a GM engine it is a boat engine. It just seems to me that a car engine is quieter. I don't know how to describe the sound other than it is loud like a lawnmower, not a knock or a whine, more like a Grrrrr.
I thought it might be the bearing issue, but after tearing it down, the bearings look okay and the crank journals are fine. I'm just not sure about that oil hole.
So the two questions are:
1. Can anyone have experience with the bearing hole issue?
2. Are boat engines typically louder than car engines?
See Attachment.
Thanks, Greg
