I have a 1983 OMC 3,8L. I either need to replace the distributor or else change it to electronic ignition. Any suggestions? Which is simpler? Which is cheaper?

Re: OMC 3.8 distributor

I had a miss and after much searching, I discovered the weights on the distributor are worn out. I can reset the timing and the points and it will run like a top for a while but then it will kick out again and die or start missing.

Cannot find a distributor locally in Kentucky for the 3.8L. Even on the web I am having trouble locating one. Any suggestions as to who might carry one?

That's going to be a tough one to find. IBM7014 I suspect is what you have.
There is no electronic version and no Pertronix for it. You're stuck with points.
You might look for a guy that works on old points distributors and get him to replace the weights and springs.... or find someone that can get you the parts at least.
That distributor was over $1000 anyways from Mercruiser or OMC so don't look too hard for a new one.
FYI
Keep in mind when you go to install that distributor, it's like no other....... You have to have the points cam on the right type of bump for #1 TDC. The OMC manual says nothing about it.
Download the Merc manual (#6 I think?) and follow the Merc 229V6 distributor install instructions.

Re: OMC 3.8 distributor

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I will check locally for someone with some experience handling the older engines. Hard to find but I will keep looking. I will download the Merc manual and follow the directions for the 229. Anything else I should look for?
