I have a new to me 1984 3.8l OMC that I have been resurrecting. I now have the engine running smoothly on the muffs and am moving on to checking the outdrive.
When I turn on the water to the muffs, I get water everywhere around the muffs themselves, and when I run the motor I am getting water out at the ball gears, at the intersection between the outdrive and the intermediate housing, and out the prop. The engine is not overheating, and the thermostat seems to be operating.
What I don't have is a stream of water out a tattle tale anywhere that I can see. I do see a small hole on the outdrive starboard side casing up by the pivot cap and bumpers, but no water is coming out there.
Remember that I am new to I/O boats - is there a tattle tale on this outdrive? I don't seem to have a cooling issue, but if something is not working correctly, I'd rather fix it now before it develops into something larger.
I have some water in the fluid in the upper unit, but I'm also missing the seal around the dip stick hole, so that could be the issue. I need to drain and refill it and see what develops, but if there is a problem with the cooling system, I had best fix that first.
Thanks to everyone for all their help so far.
